According to Nielsen, the average American spends 33 hours a week watching television. On the weekends we pack the multiplexes to see this Saturday’s superhero deliver justice to yet another megalomaniacal monster. Film and television entertain us, but they can also enrich our lives. They can introduce us to new worlds and new ideas. Cinema has the power to change hearts and minds. Movies like Philadelphia, Moonlight, Do the Right Thing, Blackfish, An Inconvenient Truth, and The Thin Blue Line have broken boundaries and opened eyes. In this special panel, we sit down with Amanda Bailly (8 Borders, 8 Days), James Demo (The Peacemaker), Joyce Chen and Emily Moore (“Refugee”), as well as UCF Film Professor and Hollywood screenwriter Barry Sandler (Making Love) to discuss how films can combat political extremism, expose prejudice, and champion human rights for everyone regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Moderated by Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan.
