Vita & Virginia

Directed by: Chanya Button

Ireland/UK, 2018, 110m

The year is 1922. Though happily married, Vita Sackville-West (Gemma Arterton, Gemma Bovery) is as notorious for her dalliances with women and iconoclastic attitudes toward gender as she is famous for her aristocratic ancestry and writerly success. Virginia Woolf (Elizabeth Debicki, Widows), meanwhile, is a celebrated writer, publisher, and member of the Bloomsbury Group, those innovative moderns already revolutionizing literature. When Vita receives an invitation to Bloomsbury, she is elated at the thought of meeting the enigmatic Woolf and, not surprisingly perhaps, becomes obsessed with the notion of seducing her. Based on Sackville-West and Woolf’s personal correspondence, Vita & Virginia is a smart and striking look at two brilliant women and the love that shaped one of Woolf’s most celebrated literary creations. With bold performances from both Debicki and Areteron—that should pique the interest of more than just literary cinephiles—this sensuous period piece is a showcase for director Chanya Button and co-writer Eileen Atkins’s (Mrs. Dalloway) custom blend of Merchant-Ivoryesque feminism.
