The irresistibly charismatic Hanif pays amends for a troubled past, including some prison time, by building caskets and washing bodies of the deceased in accordance with Muslim burial traditions. His world of Newark, New Jersey, is filled with struggle and challenge, but still Hanif’s spirit and optimism are a beacon of hope for those around him, especially young people. Painfully clear paths emerge for two of the people in Hanif’s life: 12-year-old Furquan sees Hanif filling the void of a missing father figure and 17-year-old Naz, who’s been on the wrong side of the law for a while, struggles to follow the advice that might save his life. Shot in beautiful black and white, bolstered by unflinching access to its story, this film is a remarkable achievement.
