From Oscar®-winning producer Joanna Natasegara (“Sophie and the Baron,” FFF 2021) comes the harrowing story of the clandestine jaguar trade. Spanning two continents, Tigre Gente centers around the dueling stories of a ranger monitoring the situation in Madidi National Park of Bolivia and a journalist digging into the traditional Chinese medicine trade of Hong Kong. With the continual Chinese demand for exotic cats to use in homeopathic prescriptions, illegal traffickers look toward the South American jaguars as substitutes for the increasingly rare tiger parts. Director Elizabeth Unger embeds the audience in the underground jaguar trade, weaving together a sprawling conservationist thriller that spans from the beauty of the Amazon to the bustle of Hong Kong—making the film’s gorgeously shot locales all the more unsettling, as the audience is forced to bear witness to the harrowing environmental cause and effect playing out in real time.
