USA, 2019, 96m
Following his parents’ separation and a wild act of rebellion, Ben (John-Paul Howard, Midnight, Texas) is sent to live with his father for the summer, working at the local marina in order to gain some form of discipline. Yet the picturesque tourist town offers little solace for him, as he is forced to deal with privileged rich-kid bullies and his father’s budding romance. His troubles grow exponentially when he makes a chilling discovery about the family renting the house next door. A malevolent spirit from the forest takes hold of the parents and begins to play a sinister game of house, preying upon the children. This follow up to their cult zom-com breakout Deadheads, finds the Pierce brothers mining rich horror territory and showing a mastery for dark and suspenseful imagery. Nominated for Best Film at Montreal’s legendary Fantasia Film Festival, The Wretched will encourage viewers to be wary of every creeping corner they encounter.
