Holly is a wife and mother on the edge of a nervous breakdown: her family treats her like a doormat, her job as a high school English teacher is devoid of meaning, and her grasp on reality is tentative. Insomnia medication has been giving her violent dreams that feel a little too close to reality. Add to this the explosive mix of a volatile sister, an obsessive student with a crush, and a pesky mouse that seems to taunt Holly’s every move, and you have the dark, reality-twisting slow-burn psychological thriller The Swerve. Azura Skye (winner of Best Actress at Cinepocalypse) gives a powerful and haunting performance as Holly in this welcome return to the festival from director Dean Kapsalis (“Jigsaw Venus,” FFF 2001). Aided by a highly evocative score by composer Mark Korven (The VVitch), middle-class suburbia never looked so bleak, and this film’s ending will haunt you long after you leave the theater.
