Bunny King (Essie Davis of The Babadook, FFF 2014), a headstrong mother of two with a sketchy past, earns her keep by washing windows for tips at traffic lights. For now, she’s sleeping on her sister’s couch, but she’s saving up for a place of her own in order to regain custody of her kids, who have been placed in foster care. After promising her daughter a birthday party, Bunny can only keep her word by breaking the rules. However, in doing so, she risks losing her children altogether. Accompanied by her niece Tonya (Thomasin McKenzie, Last Night in Soho), a teenager running away from her own problems, Bunny is in a race against the clock. With the world against both her and Tonya, Bunny’s battle has just begun. An outstanding debut feature, The Justice of Bunny King is the deeply affecting story of a woman refusing to back down from a system that’s stacked against her. At each step of Bunny’s journey, the fearless Essie Davis brings a rough-edged authenticity to this portrait of a mother in crisis, which becomes a testament to resilience in the face of adversity.
