Flavio Alves’s The Garden Left Behind is the heart-rending story of Tina (Carlie Guevara), a beautiful 30-year-old Mexican trans woman, and Eliana (Miriam Cruz), her grandmother, as they navigate Tina’s transition and struggle as undocumented immigrants in New York City. Their dreams are at odds: Eliana longs for Mexico, while Tina, who has been in NYC since she was six years old, is there to stay. Tina perseveres, earning money for her transition as a gypsy cab driver while under the care of kind-hearted psychologist Dr. Cleary (Ed Asner). When she joins a trans advocacy group, Tina gains courage and dignity, along with a secret admirer, Chris (brilliantly played by Anthony Abdo), who works in the neighborhood bodega and longs for a different life as much as Tina does. The Garden Left Behind is making history as eBay’s first ever crowd-sourced film and boasts a cast and crew of over 50 transgender actors and filmmakers. Its message is an anthem of our time—a monumental song of understanding for the trans community.
