In the 1990s, cheap rent and big houses in Athens, GA, and Denver, CO, drew together a group of musicians who collectively launched the most important underground music movement of the decade. In a perfect DIY pop universe, the confluence of Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, and many more reset the game of indie rock. This incredible documentary somehow manages to both embrace the chaos of the time as well as make sense of it all. The nature of how these artists worked and overlapped could be misconstrued as convoluted, but The Elephant 6 Recording Co. finds the emotional core of these talented and visionary artists. This psychedelic rock music, often created by non-musicians and recorded on creaky 4-tracks, developed a loyal following who shared cassette tapes and 45s, and packed into raucous live shows. Featuring interviews with the band members, performances, and video clips, this fast-paced, monumental rock-doc charts the genesis of an uber-creative, DIY music scene and captures its electricity, joy, and wonder.
