Directed by: Lance Oppenheim

USA, 2020, 83m

In Some Kind of Heaven, South Florida filmmaker Lance Oppenheim (“Long Term Parking,” FFF 2017) takes us into the country’s largest retirement community known as much for its for its utopian ideals as it is for its manicured lawns, palm tree-lined streets, and countless entertainments and activities, all only a golf cart ride away. Once inside the master-planned Villages, we meet a cast of character-residents: a married couple, a West coast gate crasher, a Miss Lonelyhearts from Boston, a perennial Parrothead. Premiering at Sundance 2020, Oppenheim’s solid feature debut with its deft cinematography of picture-perfect Americana wants to challenge our stereotypes around aging while at the same time upend the perceived pleasantry and normalcy America’s pre-planned community sells. In a subtle turn, Oppenheim tends to the poignant lived experiences of a few struggling to find themselves within the pre-packaged and self-described “friendliest” retirement community in sunny Florida.
