Marvelous and the Black Hole

Directed by: Kate Tsang

USA, 2021, 81m, Note to family audiences: Recommended for 11+. Contains mild profanity, teenage smoking, and comedic scenes of fantasized violence. Not rated, but comparable to PG-13.

Sammy (a perfectly cast Miya Cech, Always Be My Maybe) is a moody and rebellious 13-year-old Chinese-American teenager. Behind the snarl, cigarettes, and combat boots, she’s struggling to cope with the loss of her mother as well as her father’s ability to move on. After storming out of her first summer-school class, Sammy meets Margot (a terrific Rhea Perlman, TV’s Cheers, Matilda), a surly children’s-party magician old enough to be her grandmother, who forces her to be her assistant for a performance. Initially uninterested, Sammy eventually asks to become Margot’s pupil, and an unlikely friendship grows that will change their lives forever in unexpected and fantastic ways. Kate Tsang’s refreshing debut feature is a unique and touching coming-of-age comedy filled with moments of whimsy and magic, as this surprising odd couple learn from one another and navigate grief, forgiveness, and finding hope in the darkest moments.
