Artistic collaboration is challenging in the best of circumstances, even when the stakes are low. Imagine how much more difficult it is when the goal is to create the world’s largest stained-glass window, using entirely new techniques, on an impossibly tight schedule, in pursuit of artistic standards that never existed before. Your collaborator: a totally uncompromising artist who believes anything less than masterpiece is trash. This is what artist Tim Carey—himself still relatively new to the stained-glass world—encounters when he bluffs his way into winning the commission for a wildly complicated window the size of a basketball court, destined to be the focal point of a Kansas City mega-church. With great heart and huge dollops of tension, Holy Frit follows Carey and company’s efforts to meet a challenge that requires a higher power not simply from the Divine, but the near magical “frit” technique of a world-famous, Italian glass maestro. Enter Narcissus Quagliata, who offers a path of salvation for the window and Carey in this stylish, entertaining, and surprisingly intimate film. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at Slamdance 2021.
