A bright, color-coordinated suburbia frames this hilariously disturbing satire about the lengths women will go for validation from their friends and neighbors. Writer-director team Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe star as best frenemies whose relationship becomes strained when Jill (DeBoer) gifts Lisa (Luebbe) her infant daughter, just to be polite. Absurdity teems at birthday parties, after-school activities, and trips to the grocery store, as everyone strives for the appearance of normalcy and politeness in the face of increasingly twisted circumstances, including a wardrobe-stealing serial killer on the loose. Adapted from an award-winning 2015 short, the film features a cast of fellow Upright Citizens Brigade improv alums, including D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Neil Casey (Silicon Valley), and Mary Holland (Veep), as well as SNL’s Beck Bennet. Greener Grass is Americana at its most demented, giving us an outrageous cautionary tale about the dangers of comparing our lives to others.
