After an accident confines Javi to a wheelchair, David—plagued by guilt having been behind the wheel of the car that almost killed him—feels compelled to become the live-in caregiver for this old friend. His amigo. Slowly, animosity starts to build. Javi hates David, his resentment leaving no room for forgiveness. Javi’s total dependence, and his constant bell ringing, won’t let David forget what he has done. Have they settled into a vicious nihilistic cycle, or have they reached a point where they are now playing twisted mind games with each other? Shot in one week by real-life friends—director Óscar Martín and stars Javier Botet and David Pareja—the filmmakers referred to Amigo as “The Intouchables but with sons of bitches.” Amigo is a pressure cooker of tension with an undercurrent of mean-spirited menace and macabre dark comedy. A truly unnerving tale that dances on a razor’s edge of tension as you wait—every fiber of your being buzzing—for the entire thing to explode.
