Is it fallout or change that finally will kill the babushkas of Chernobyl? This doc perfectly captures the joyful fortitude and camaraderie of aging women who have returned to their poisoned homes after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. There they live alone, eking out an existence, defying banishment and exile, determined to die there if necessary. However most have defied death thus far; they continue to live vigorous if lonely lives in the rapidly re-encroaching arboreal wilderness. Juxtaposed against their sheer determination to live as they wish is the lunatic story of young gamers who briefly sneak into the most dangerous parts of the forbidden dead zone to emulate the video games they play. Who are the real lunatics here? It’s hard to tell, but it’s also hard to resist the incredibly hardy, cheerful babushkas of Chernobyl.
