The lives of three irrepressible inner-city Baltimore teens are lovingly chronicled in this poignant and timely documentary from Tony-winner producer (and first time director) Amanda Lipitz (Legally Blond: The Musical). Attendees of The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women—whose mandate is to send every girl to college despite the barriers they face at home—Blessin Giraldo, Tayla Solomon, and Cori Grainger are members of the “Lethal Ladies” step dance team—each striving to navigate their hurried senior year, apply for college, and win the Bowie State step competition. STEP is an astonishingly joyous film that celebrates the power of young women working together. The production, which began in the wake of Baltimore resident Freddie Gray’s death and the riots and protests that followed, shines a light on the very real challenges that urban minority women face but does so with both empathy and light. Call it a Hoop Dreams for the Snapchat generation, this remarkable film shows and proves that sometimes all you need to get through life is a ferocious beat.
