Honey Buddies

  • USA, 2016, 80 minutes

  • East Coast premiere
  • Rated Unrated

Auditioning for a role in a Lewis and Clark biopic, David (David Giuntoli, TV’s Grimm), a former child star, returns home to discover his fiancée has left him and taken most of the furniture with her. His upbeat and very German best man (Flula Borg, Pitch Perfect 2) convinces him to go on his honeymoon anyway. Together these seemingly opposite “honey buddies” tackle a seven-day backpacking trip though the glorious Oregon wilderness to very mixed results. Winner of the Audience Award for Narrative Feature at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival, Alex Simmons’s directorial debut makes incredible use of the stunning wilderness vistas and conveys a brilliant mix of both slapstick absurdity and surprising sentimentality. A “bromance” movie that avoids the more obvious clichés of the genre, HONEY BUDDIES displays unexpected heart while still delivering show-stopping insanity by Borg, whose behavior, while outrageous, never feels wildly unbelievable.
