Closing Night Retro
Sleeper
DIRECTED BY WOODY ALLEN
USA, 1973, 88 MINUTES
Woody Allen gives us a hilarious and nostalgic look at the future in this 40th anniversary screening of SLEEPER. Miles Monroe (Allen), jazz musician and health food store owner, is the subject of accidental cryogenic freezing after going into the hospital for an ulcer in 1973. When he is revived 200 years later, he discovers the world of 2173 is a very different place. Finding himself in a totalitarian state, Miles hesitantly works with the rebellion as a spy. And for anyone who knows Woody Allen’s ‘70s work, it’s no surprise he takes time out to fall in love with Diane Keaton’s socialite character, Luna. SLEEPER has the feel of a silent film with the addition of all the wry, witty dialogue we have come to expect from Allen’s madcap comedies of the era. And the amazing Dixieland music score, played by Allen himself with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, just adds to the fun. Come help us wrap up the 22nd Annual Florida Film Festival with this beautiful 35mm print of one of the American Film Institute’s listed “Funniest Films of All Time.”
