Lore

DIRECTED BY CATE SHORTLAND
GERMANY/AUSTRALIA, 2012, 108 MINS
IN GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

Sponsored by The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Miami and the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Orlando

Set adrift by the Allied capture of her Nazi parents, 15-year-old Lore (short for “Hannelore”) takes her three younger brothers and sister on a harrowing journey through a war-ravaged German landscape to her grandmother’s home 500 miles north. Along the way the children must trust the people they have been taught to hate in their pursuit of food, shelter, and the possibility of getting just a little closer to safety. The desperation of the waning days of World War II is made only more grim for Lore as she is exposed to the cold reality of survival and the gruesome truth of Hitler’s Third Reich. The haunting Saskia Rosendahl, in the title role, captivates in this unique and bold exploration of the Holocaust, World War II, and coming of age in a war zone. Australia’s official entry for this year’s Academy Awards®, the stunningly photographed LORE won the audience award at Locarno and Best Film at the Hamptons Film Festival.
