Special Screening
An Evening with Tippi Hedren, featuring The Birds
DIRECTED BY ALFRED HITCHCOCK
USA, 1963, 119 MIN
Carefree socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren in her award-winning debut) planned on surprising love interest Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) by dropping by Bodega Bay, a nice but isolated community north of San Francisco where Mitch spends weekends visiting his mother (Jessica Tandy). However, innocuous flirting is cut short on this visit, and it becomes a fight for survival when thousands of birds inexplicably begin viciously attacking the residents. Equal parts unnerving, shocking, and fun, Alfred Hitchcock’s follow-up to Psycho is based on the short story by Daphne du Maurier and adapted by novelist Evan Hunter (aka Ed McBain). It’s also quite possibly one of the greatest disaster films of all time and has some of the best villains in horror movie history. Even Hitchcock was quoted as saying, “It could be the most terrifying motion picture I have ever made!” Presented in a beautiful digital restoration in celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary, THE BIRDS is a harrowing, nature-gone-awry tale filled with legendary scenes. Ms. Hedren will be in attendance for a post-film Q&A to discuss creating a cinema classic with the “Master of Suspense.”
