ROSEMARY'S BABY
USA, 1968, 136 MIN
DIRECTED BY ROMAN POLANSKI
In 1967, legendary director/producer William Castle (House on Haunted Hill, Straight-Jacket) cannily snatched up the film rights to Ira Levin's as-yet-unpublished novel, seeing in its pages a brilliant horror film and a box-office bonanza to boot. Originally intending to direct the adaptation himself, Castle reluctantly hired upstart European sensation Roman Polanski to direct, having been persuaded that Polanski was indeed the only man for the job--largely because of Polanski's insistence that the film follow the book to the letter. Castle's instincts proved correct--Rosemary's Baby became an enormous success upon release and has remained an undisputed classic of the cinema, horror or otherwise. A 22-year old Mia Farrow stars in her breakthrough role as the unsuspecting young wife whose husband becomes involved with a witches’ coven and their diabolical plans, along with a marvelous supporting cast including John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon (a Best Supporting Actress Oscar), Ralph Bellamy, and Elisha Cook, Jr. (don’t miss a cameo by producer Castle at the phone booth!) Enormously influential and endlessly imitated, Castle and Polanski's collaboration still endures as a timeless, engrossing chiller, four decades after its own unholy birth. You don’t want to miss this special 40th anniversary screening of an archival print from the Paramount vaults!
