THEN SHE FOUND ME
USA, 2007, 100 MIN, Rated R
DIRECTED BY HELEN HUNT
Winner of the Audience Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Helen Hunt’s feature-length directorial debut treats viewers to a story of self-fulfillment rife with realism and subtle humor. New York schoolteacher April Epner (played by Hunt) is nearing 40 and eager to have a baby, a desire based in part on the fact that having been adopted, she never knew her own birth mother. Her plans are abruptly derailed when her husband of less than a year (Matthew Broderick) has a change of heart and deems their marriage a mistake, followed shortly by the death of her adoptive mother. Enter overbearing local talk show host Bernice Graves (played with characteristic gusto by Bette Midler), declaring herself April’s birth mother, and comforting, newly single Frank (Colin Firth), the father of one of April’s students. The splendid cast offers sincere performances as the reconstruction of April’s life considers the issues of family, love, pregnancy, and childhood with maturity and refreshing depth. Then She Found Me is very smart, very funny, and very impressive for the Oscar-winning actress’ first time behind the camera.
