MISTER FOE
SCOTLAND/UK, 2007, 95 MIN, Rated R
DIRECTED BY DAVID MACKENZIE
East Coast Premiere
David Mackenzie’s (Young Adam, 2003 FFF) new film, based on Peter Jinks’ novel, gets into the head of disturbed teen Hallam Foe (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) and takes us onto the rooftops and streets of Edinburgh. Having lost his mother to an apparent suicide, the confused and pained 17-year-old finds an unusual coping mechanism: peeping. And he’s good at it. Add to this the “o’er hasty marriage” of Hallam’s father (Ciarán Hinds) to a beautiful younger woman (Claire Forlani) he both hates and is attracted to, and his obsession with the gorgeous Kate (Sophia Myles), who happens to be a dead ringer for his mother in her youth. What you’ve got is a dark and strange Hamlet and Oedipal dynamic, Scottish-style, that only someone like Mackenzie can deliver. There’s real chemistry between Bell and Myles, but also raw emotional nerves are exposed by all. Who’s to judge how we cope with the loss of a loved one, as long as we move on? This perverse, moody coming-of-age story also boasts a great soundtrack featuring Orange Juice, Franz Ferdinand, and Clinic, and won an Independent Jury Prize at the 2007 Berlin Film Festival.
