Albert Lamorisse’s brilliant 1956 children’s classic Le Ballon Rouge (The Red Balloon) serves as inspiration for director Hou Hsaio-Hsien’s (The Puppetmaster) newest film (and first ever set outside of Asia), Flight of the Red Balloon. The charming, engaging story centers on a self-obsessed, slightly manic puppeteer and mother, Suzanne (Academy Award-winner Juliette Binoche, The English Patient, Chocolat), who is more devoted to the puppet theater she works at than she is with her curious son Simon. Simon finds himself being followed affectionately by a red balloon around picturesque Paris while his mother becomes completely enveloped by her new show. Finding no time for housework or to care for her son, Suzanne hires a Taiwanese film student to help out. Their cluttered apartment serves as the host of many funny moments between the trio as we discover their odd habits and a new, endearing relationship. Hsaio-Hsien crafts an extremely beautiful, serene, even transcendent film about the unraveling of adulthood and the curiosity of youth.
