JELLYFISH
ISRAEL/FRANCE, 2007, 78 MIN
DIRECTED BY ETGAR KERET & SHIRA GEFFEN
In Hebrew and French with English subtitles
Florida Premiere
An unsettling, magical, and unpredictable film about memory, loss, and imagination, the visually witty Jellyfish tells the rich story of three women whose intersecting lives weave an unlikely portrait of modern Israeli life. Batya (Sarah Adler), a catering waitress, is stuck in a dead end job, but her life changes when she finds a little girl abandoned on a local beach. Keren (Noa Knoller) is getting married to Michael (Gera Sandler). Everything seems to be going well until Keren breaks her ankle, resulting in a disastrous honeymoon. Meanwhile Joy (Ma-nenita De Lotorre), a middle aged Filipino caregiver, works for an elderly lady who speaks only Hebrew. Joy seems adrift in a culture that is not her own, and she longs with quiet patience to go back home to her son. Each of the three women brings us into her own unique world, yet they all seem to find refuge in the tranquil sea. Nominated for 10 Israeli Film Academy Awards and winner of the prestigious Camera d’Or for the best first feature at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, Jellyfish is a must see.
