Fast feet, creativity, and passion come together in this highly entertaining documentary about Jump Rope and Double Dutch. Both sports are more popular than ever, and as this intimate film reveals, they take a lot of heart and some hearts get broken. Doubletime follows two award-winning jump rope teams on a journey from their hometowns to the national championships in Orlando to the Big Apple, as they train to compete with each other for the very first time. The Double Dutch Forces team from Columbia, SC, is a support network for mostly black inner-city youth, while the Bouncing Bulldogs from Chapel Hill, NC, is a school team of white suburban kids proving themselves in an urban sport. The differences between the teams are blaring, but it is their similarities that make these 11-18 year-old kids extraordinary. When both are invited to compete at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York, the teams must perform routines in the “Fusion” format: a blend of jump rope, dance, and Hip-Hop music to which the Bulldogs have had little exposure. Will they win over the tough crowd? What about the dark horse team from Japan? You won’t want to skip this one.
