KABLUEY
USA, 2007, 87 MIN
DIRECTED BY SCOTT PRENDERGAST
Southeast Premiere
Most of us, especially in Central Florida, have wondered what it’s like to wear one of those big, awkward character costumes. Salman is about to find out. This lovable loser (played by writer-director Scott Prendergast) is the only person who can help his brittle-but-vulnerable sister-in-law, Leslie (an excellent Lisa Kudrow), who has a husband stationed in Iraq, two monster sons, and a job awaiting her. The penniless Salman finds employment playing Kabluey, an adorable, amorphous, corporate mascot. Every day he stands on a lonely highway handing out fliers. . . which isn’t easy with no discernible hands. Plodding on through numerous indignities, the long-suffering Salman discovers how to use Kabluey to his advantage, and helps Leslie and her sons out in brave, hilarious ways none of them would ever have imagined. A bright mix of physical comedy and emotional authenticity, Kabluey is a textured, unique, LOL look at middle class American life in all its hope, desperation, and fabulous weirdness.
