WESLEY WILLIS'S JOYRIDES
USA, 2007, 78 MINS
DIRECTED BY CHRIS BAGLEY & KIM SHIVELY
East Coast Premiere
Things are not always what they seem. Such is the case for 6"6", 350-pound Wesley Willis, who grew up on the south side of Chicago, dressed like he was homeless, greeted fans with a head-butt, and suffered from debilitating bouts of schizophrenia. Even with such great odds working against him, Wesley remained a gentle giant whose non-stop creativity propelled him to record, perform, and draw up until the end of his life. Known primarily as an "outsider artist," Willis did garner some national attention in the mid '90s as an underground rock icon with appearances on MTV and The Howard Stern Show. This "Rock You Mentary" contains interviews with his friends and fellow artists as well as candid, heartbreaking, and humorous footage of the man himself during the last years of his life. What becomes abundantly clear when watching the inspiring Wesley Willis's Joyrides is how much his family, friends, and fans loved him and miss him.
