KAMP KATRINA
USA, 2006, 74 MIN
DIRECTED BY DAVID REDMON & ASHLEY SABIN
East Coast Premiere
This cinema-verite experience features a group of displaced residents in New Orleans as they try to put their lives together after the devastation of Katrina. Brought together by Pearl, an industrious, generous Native American who allows for the construction of a tent city in her backyard, these troubled people are finally brought down by the complexity of the tragedy they face and their own inabilities to hold their community together. Even Pearl's ability to offer employment to those who need it is not enough to keep things going. Populated by a cast of troubled and determined people, this film manages to show the best and worst of humanity with immediacy and compassion. David Redmon's work has been seen here before (2005 FFF Grand Jury Award winner Mardi Gras in China) and this time, with co-director Ashley Sabin, he has given us a film that is a study in social psychology with a dash of political science.
