Under African Skies
DIRECTED BY JOE BERLINGER
USA/SOUTH AFRICA, 2012, 108 MIN
Twenty-five years after the recording of his masterpiece album Graceland, Paul Simon returns to South Africa for a reunion with his collaborators in a joyous occasion celebrated as one might expect—with memories and song in a glorious fusion of African and American sounds. The studio rocks as the artists pick up right where they left off. Just like old days. But the old days were far from untroubled as the film dips back into the issue of Simon’s then-defiance of the UN cultural boycott of South Africa, which was intended to end Apartheid. Simon’s choice to pursue the project despite the boycott was a controversial issue then and surprisingly prickly even after all these years. FFF alum Joe Berlinger (the Paradise Lost trilogy) assembles a chorus of notables, including David Byrne, Paul McCartney, Harry Belafonte, and Quincy Jones, to weigh in on Simon’s genius as well as the extraordinary musicians who created Graceland, and to ponder Simon’s cry of anguish, “Why do politicians think artists work for them?!?!”
