Lovely Molly
DIRECTED BY EDUARDO SÁNCHEZ
USA, 2011, 96 MIN, RATED R
EAST COAST PREMIERE/2ND US SHOWING
Back again to completely scare the crap out of audiences everywhere, writer/director/editor Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project, FFF 1999; Seventh Moon, FFF 2009) has switched gears a bit to bring us a brooding, Repulsion-like tale of a fragile young woman’s mental disintegration in the face of an unrelenting evil. Working-class newlyweds Molly (astounding newcomer Gretchen Lodge) and Tim, a mall janitorial worker and a trucker, move into Molly’s deceased father’s house in the countryside to save money. An ex-addict with a deeply troubled past, Molly initially turned to drugs to soothe the memories of an abusive childhood and now struggles to stay clean. Unexplained disturbances in the night soon unnerve the couple, and when her husband has to go back out on the road for a job, Molly’s isolation is shattered by a malevolent ghostly presence and her grip on reality begins to waver. With its effective music score by Tortoise, nerve-racking sound design, and the frighteningly intense performance by Lodge as a woman slowly coming apart at the seams, LOVELY MOLLY is an unsettling tale of sexual and physical abuse and potential demonic possession that will haunt you for days afterward.
