Andrew Bird: Fever Year
DIRECTED BY XAN ARANDA
USA, 2011, 81 MIN
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
The glittering, sequin-covered shoes which appear in the first frame of this film are an ideal metaphor for Andrew Bird. On one hand, he’s a startlingly original, super-literate pop songsmith who combines classical violin, a steam-punk set presentation, and loop-based backing tracks (created live and triggered by toe taps). On the other hand, he’s just an old pair of shoes—quiet, comfortable, and functional. Bird has carved a narrow path through the music biz muck for well over a decade, delighting those in the know with deeply satisfying songs that are profoundly individual and gloriously melodic. In a cool, slightly distant manner which matches her subject’s media-shy posture, director Xan Aranda captures Bird on and off stage during the final days of a grueling 165-show tour. We see the final output (which changes nightly) as well as creative process behind it all. Bird was ill with a low-grade fever for most of the tour and often seems sweaty and distracted, almost hallucinating. He sees the illness as an indication that he’s evolving into a new creature better-suited for life on tour. That’s good because, judging by the adoring crowds cheering him onward, Bird’s going to be doing this for a long time.
