The Weird World of Blowfly
DIRECTED BY JONATHAN FURMANSKI
USA, 2010, 91 MIN
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
Talk about a film living up to its title! Yes, the world of Blowfly is truly weird. Weird because Blowfly is a 69 year-old man in a glittering mask who spouts the most XXX-rated lyrics ever conceived while leading a grinding funk band across the world. Weird because Blowfly lays a legit claim to recording the world’s first rap song (1965’s Rap Dirty). Weirder still because Blowfly is actually the alter-ego of Clarence Reid, co-founder of the famed “Miami Sound” and a prolific songsmith who penned Top 10 soul hits for Betty Wright, Sam and Dave, KC & The Sunshine Band, and even reached #7 on his own in 1969 with “Nobody But You Babe.” Where does Blowfly end and Clarence start? That’s the weirdest part of all. As filmmaker Furmanski reveals the struggles, philosophies, and hang-ups of his subject, it’s hard to imagine Clarence would even be friends with Blowfly, let alone the same person. But a man and his myth must co-exist, so climb in the van and join the Weird World of Blowfly—just don’t put his pizza on the chair.
