The Troll Hunter

DIRECTED BY ANDRÉ ØVREDAL
NORWAY, 2010, 103 MIN
IN NORWEGIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

A startling new addition to the found-footage mockumentary genre of horror films such as The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield, Norway’s THE TROLL HUNTER is an inventive, darkly funny thrill-ride packed with eye-popping visual effects. Here’s the premise: hundreds of hours of mysterious video footage have been found, and after a thorough investigation, concluded to be authentic. The shooters, three student filmmakers who ventured into the remote forests of Norway to make a film about illegal bear poaching, discover instead that Hans, the man they’ve targeted, is actually an off-the-books government operative in charge of protecting the public from the giant terrors that lurk in the desolate woods. For centuries, unsuspecting Norwegians have assumed trolls were nothing more than myth and legend, but now Hans plans to blow the lid off the whole operation. THE TROLL HUNTER cleverly adheres to original Norwegian folklore, and its Blair-Witch-meets-Where-the-Wild-Things-Are sensibility makes for a wildly entertaining excursion into fairy-tale terror.
