Special Jury Award for Documentary Filmmaking
Do the items we leave behind reveal any truths about who we were? Can our legacy be summed up by a garage-sized storage unit filled to the gills with a lifetime of “stuff”? Filmmaker Lawrence Johnson narrates, in a voice reminiscent of both Garrison Keillor and Spalding Gray, the story of how he came to possess all his father’s earthly possessions. Johnson, unemployed, middle aged, and about to embark on his third marriage, struggles to make peace with the ambivalent emotions he has about mourning his father. And instead he utilizes the responsibility of being the heir to his father’s belongings as an opportunity to re-examine the roles of fathers and sons. What is at first both an obligation and albatross becomes liberating as the filmmaker sheds his own possessions to find himself. STUFF is as literary as it is visual as it pushes the boundaries of documentary through its use of still photography, home movies, and surreal animation.
