A pair of lovers — intellectuals with a bent for a macabre sort of improv — move from town to town, cruelly destroying the lives of others in an elaborate series of deceptions that add up to a sexually charged high-wire act, each movement more dangerous than the one before. As the lovers, Enid Graham (Boardwalk Empire) and Lee Tergesen (Desperate Housewives, Oz) deliver astonishing, crisply controlled performances that leave you wondering what is “real” — to the characters, the audience, and the actors. It’s a rare thing, such a finely brushed and nearly bloodless veneer over such an evil story (written by director Simon Arthur), but it’s addictive — you can’t turn away, even as you find yourself cringing in guilty amazement at these emotional con artists. Sick and brilliant, this winner of the 2011 Slamdance Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature will leave audiences gasping — and talking about it for years to come.
