Louder Than a Bomb is the largest youth poetry slam in the world. Every March teams from schools all over Chicago gather to compete. The competition is as intense and diverse as the poetry is raw and powerful. This isn’t “high school poetry” as we often think of it; this is the language of youth delivered with all its angst, passion, and pain by teenagers obsessed with making each carefully chosen word hit its mark. The poets themselves are at times inspiring and heartbreaking as they struggle with the ups and downs of their young lives and turn to pen and paper to make sense out of a confusing and difficult world. LOUDER THAN A BOMB follows four high school poetry teams as they prepare for and compete in the ultimate poetry slam contest. More than simply documenting a competition, this irresistible and exhilarating film charts young people expressing themselves through writing and in the process finding their own voices.

What if we lived in a world where everybody loved everybody all the time? That is the deceptively simple question filmmaker Matt Morris (“Pickin’ & Trimmin’,” FFF 2009 Grand Jury Award for Best Doc Short) poses in this joy-joy-joy-filled romp. “I enjoy making people happy,” says Johnny Barnes, Bermuda octogenarian. He does. And you will be.
