Set in Iran just after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, this film examines the lives of six young Iranians whose life problems – which include parents, sexuality, illicit relationships, and sexual identities – are intensified to desperation in a conservative Islamic society. Made in secret without permits so that it might tell its stories free of censorship or retribution, the film has an urgency that is at once disquieting and exhilarating. The stories are simplicity themselves: A gay man faces an arranged marriage; a feminist has an affair with a married man; lovers seek a place to consummate their desires; a female pop singer must work in hiding; and a bereft son strikes back at fundamentalists. Directed with a firm hand by Hossein Keshavarz, this film gives voice to the young of Iran and to their need for revolution.
