Richard Dunn (Jeff Daniels, The Squid & the Whale) is suffering from a most debilitating affliction: writer’s block. His wife Claire (Lisa Kudrow, TV’s Friends), a New York surgeon, hopes to inspire his creativity by getting him out of the city and renting a house on the Long Island seashore. Caught between the pressure of deadlines and the expectations of his successful wife, he is a frustrated and failed author unable to focus. Even his childhood imaginary friend, Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds, The Proposal), can’t seem to break Richard out of his downward spiral. During one of his bike rides into town he meets Abby (Emma Stone, Zombieland, in a breakout role), a local high schooler and sullen kindred spirit with both a longtime friend (Kieran Culkin, Igby Goes Down) and jerk boyfriend (Hunter Parrish, TV’s Weeds). Immediately drawn to her, the two develop a friendship that shows him no matter how much it hurts, it’s never too late to grow up. A coming-of-middle-age story that’s drawn comparisons to Lost in Translation and Away We Go for both its tone and treatment of an unconventional relationship between two lost souls, PAPER MAN was the Opening Night Film of the Los Angeles Film Festival. We are honored for it to kick off FFF 2010.
