Nobody does befuddlement better than Peter Falk. That amusing confusion rests at the very soul of this heartwarming and hilarious domestic comedy about a father and son discovering each other and some buried family truths. Falk plays Sam Kleinman, a retired businessman confronted by a cryptic, scribbled note announcing that his wife of 40 years has left him. While his daughters leap into action to track down Mom (Olympia Dukakis), son Ben (Paul Reiser) distracts him with a trip to upstate New York. Misadventures ensue and these chatty, cantankerous men from very different generations uncover resentments and bonds that neither ever imagined existed. Written by Reiser specifically for Falk, this charming and perceptive tour-de-force highlights Falk’s ability to make the most of every second he’s on screen—here’s a guy who can generate laughs by scratching his head and improvising about the olfactory capacities of fish. Directed with a sure hand by Raymond DeFelitta (Two Family House), THE THING ABOUT MY FOLKS is a witty, sentimental, and sweet road movie for the ages.
