DIRECTED BY EDWARD BURNS
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE, 2ND US SHOWING
This latest gem from actor/director Edward Burns (The Brothers McMullen) at first seems oddball whimsy about two hapless, down-and-out New Yorkers: Abe (David Krumholtz, Numb3rs), a frantic baseball coach searching for the wife who left without explanation, and Jack (Burns), the hardboiled, disenchanted detective he hires. But as they search through the New York streets, we discover both have been burned by life and are without human contact—though one needs it, and the other is simply afraid of it. Their journey, during which they come to see and accept the truth about themselves, constitutes the crux of this keenly observed, deeply affecting human comedy. In his unique, low-key style, Burns creates a film that brims with charm and humanity, rich in the nuances of offbeat characters whose flaws and vulnerabilities make them real and compelling. Burns’s genuine understanding, respect, and affection for his dog-eared misfits compels us to understand them better and makes this film something to savor and embrace. With Saturday Night Live’s Rachel Dratch and Chris Parnell.
