Author of the national bestsellers, Fast Food Nation and Reefer Madness, Eric Schlosser investigates hidden realms of American business and culture and their far-reaching effects on our lives. In this intimate conversation with the author, he challenges us to think about critical and often overlooked issues related to food safety, workers’ rights, marketing to children, and the obesity epidemic. With Fast Food Nation, Schlosser uncovers the inner workings of the American food industry. He reveals how fast food has been a revolutionary force in American life, transforming our diet and our economy, workforce, and popular culture. Here, he will contrast fast food with the Slow Food movement, a world-wide effort to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions, and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes, and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.

Add equal parts of brotherly love and delectable cuisine; sprinkle with a dash of tension and you have Big Night. Two brothers from Italy open a restaurant in 1950s New Jersey in a bid to realize their own unique American dreams. Stanley Tucci co-directs and stars in this feast of a film in which food serves as the backbone of the story, with near religious reverence given to its depiction. Introduced by Mary Ann Esposito (Ciao Italia!).

This family-friendly morning of fun and excitement won’t soon be forgotten. Join us for a presentation of the Ferncreek Elementary School Garden Project seven months in the making. Our staff and local sponsors Palmer’s Garden & Goods and Ace Hardware helped Ferncreek students, from kindergarten through sixth grade, clear beds and plant a vegetable garden while teaching them the science and nutrition behind fresh food. Ferncreek, located in the heart of the Colonialtown neighborhood in Orlando, services 400 economically and ethnically diverse students and has been an “A” rated school for the past two years. After meeting the students and learning about the project, get ready for sticky hands as we learn how to make sushi out of candy! Fun for the whole family!

HOT CHICKEN, WHOLE HOG, MARSAW, ABOVE THE LINE: SAVING WILLIE MAE’S SCOTCH HOUSE
Welcome to the world of the Southern Foodways Alliance, an institute of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture with headquarters at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. The mission of the SFA is to document and celebrate the diverse food cultures of the American South, and that’s exactly what the films of Joe York accomplish in a most entertaining way. So come check out the hottest (literally) fried chicken joint in Nashville and the fools who eat there, the barbeque pitmasters of rural Tennessee, a veteran bartender of more than 60 years in New Orleans, and a labor of love to restore a cultural and culinary landmark devastated by Hurricane Katrina. You’ll be glad you did!
