FUNNY FACE
USA, 1957, 103 MIN
DIRECTED BY STANLEY DONEN
Nominated for 4 Academy Awards and presented under the stars in celebration of its 50th Anniversary, director Stanley Donen's Funny Face is just as beautifully creative today (both musically and visually) as it was upon its release. Fred Astaire plays fashion photographer Dick Avery, who attempts to turn Audrey Hepburn's Jo Stockton from bookstore highbrow to fashion pedigree. Astaire's character is loosely based on famed photographer Richard Avedon, who actually provided some photographic advice during the shoot. The pair make a radiant team with their illuminating dance routines, and Hepburn showcases her actual singing voice. Recent advertising has sky-rocketed this film into serious pop culture status by setting a clip of Hepburn dancing in those famous "skinny black jeans" to a song by AC/DC. The actual film stands on its own legs as one of the most stylish and memorable musicals in cinema history, complete with a top Gershwin score including such classics as "S' Wonderful" and "How Long Has This Been Going On."
