SNOW CAKE
CANADA/UK, 2006, 112 MIN
DIRECTED BY MARC EVANS
Southeast Premiere/2nd US Showing
When Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman, "Prof. Snape" in the Harry Potter series), a newly released British convict, knocks on Linda's (Sigourney Weaver, The TV Set, FFF 2007) door to announce that her daughter has been killed in a terrible car accident, her reaction to his news is strange to say the least. He had only made the trip to the frozen backwater of Wawa, Ontario, out of guilt, since the vivacious 19-year-old had died in his car after he picked her up hitchhiking. Not quite what he expected, it soon becomes evident to Alex that Linda is autistic, though high-functioning. She invites him to stay, because she needs him to carry out the tasks with which she cannot cope, including help with the funeral--and garbage day. His brief drop-in to apologize becomes a lengthy sojourn as whimsical Wawa and its residents start to wear down his inhibitions, including Linda's free-spirited neighbour, Maggie (Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix), in whom Alex develops an interest. Deeply affecting and quirky to the core, Snow Cake is about unexpected friendships and features two unforgettable performances along with the music of Canadian indie-pop royalty Broken Social Scene.
