THE KING OF KONG
USA, 2007, 79 MIN
DIRECTED BY SETH GORDON

Those of us born when video games were only found in arcades can probably remember a little game called Donkey Kong. Like most videogames of that era, the objective was simple. Just guide a little man to the top of a construction rig--while dodging barrels the mischievous Kong tosses down--and free the damsel in distress. Games back then were a lot less complex than today’s videogames, and most of them were designed to collect points. In 1982, Florida local Billy Mitchell made his mark by setting the world’s highest score ever recorded for Donkey Kong – 874,300 points. Over 20 years later, Washington resident Steve Wiebe decides not only to beat Mitchell’s record, but destroy it by reaching the 1,000,000 point mark. What happens next is a cross-country battle royale between the hot sauce mogul and middle-school science teacher for the ultimate high score to be included in 2007 Guinness Book of World Records. The King of Kong is the extraordinary feature-length directorial debut of Seth Gordon (producer/editor, New York Doll).
