EAGLE VS SHARK
NEW ZEALAND, 2006, 88 MIN, RATED R
DIRECTED BY TAIKA WAITITI
Southeast Premiere
Oscar-nominated New Zealand director Taika Waititi (Two Cars, One Night) makes his feature film debut in this eccentric romantic comedy about two misfits trying to find each other in a world of video games, animal costumes, and nerd revenge. Reminiscent of Napoleon Dynamite with its quirky characters and oddball humor, the film depicts the colorful relationship between clueless geek Jarrod (Jermaine Clement) and the awkwardly shy Lily (Loren Horsley). Thoroughly self-absorbed, Jarrod's life as a video-game wiz is infiltrated by the optimistic Lily, a fast-food cashier who impresses him with her gaming skills and her shark costume. She gains entry into Jarrod's elusive world, in which he is known as the Eagle Lord. However, their painfully awkward journey is anything but conventional. For those that want a break from the fake Hollywood romantic comedies with predictable action and flawlessly beautiful actors, this film is it. Hilariously deadpan and excruciatingly real, Eagle vs Shark is an invigorating breath of fresh (comic) air.
