DIRECTED BY SARAH POLLEY
Acclaimed Canadian actress Sarah Polley makes her masterful feature-length directorial debut in this exquisite adaptation of Alice Munro's short story, "The Bear Came over the Mountain." Married for almost 50 years, Fiona (the stunning Julie Christie, Dr. Zhivago) and Grant's (Gordon Pinsent, The Shipping News) love is patient, humorous, and kind--replete with daily transcendental moments earned by facing the world together for so long. But Fiona's memory is rapidly waning, erasing a lifetime. For a while, the couple dismisses the onset of memory loss. Grant tries to deny it but Fiona, aware of the rapid encroachment of the devitalizing disease, chooses to commit herself to a permanent care facility where they must accept the inevitable and aching transition from lovers to strangers. Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) and Michael Murphy (Tanner '88) are outstanding as another couple whose lives are profoundly affected by Fiona's Alzheimer's, but Christie and Pinsent deliver simply phenomenal performances full of human sympathy and depth. Away From Her is a heartbreakingly lovely and inspiring cinematic experience.
