THE BOTHERSOME MAN
NORWAY, 2006, 95 MINS
DIRECTED BY JENS LIEN
In Norwegian with English subtitles
Southeast Premiere

What's a guy got to do to commit suicide in peace? In this delightfully droll and surreal new comedy from Norway, forty-year-old Andreas arrives in a strange city to find a new life has been handed to him: a new job with an amazing city view, a perfect well-furnished apartment, and a beautiful new girlfriend. However, Andreas "senses" something is missing. Scents, tastes, noises, and emotions may be things of the past for most in this city, but Andreas is determined to preserve these critical life elements. As he asks questions and snoops around, Andreas draws the unwelcome attention of the city's "Caretakers." Can he do anything to make his life worth living? Should he attempt an escape? Director Jens Lien's portrayal of "big brother" paranoia absurdly renders a cinematic nightmare in an everyday setting, and this Kafka-esque Best Film Award-winner at The Hamptons International Film Festival is as bone-dry as black comedy gets.
