EMILE NORMAN: BY HIS OWN DESIGN
USA, 2006, 55 MIN
DIRECTED BY WILL PARRINELLO
East Coast Premiere/2nd US Showing
At 88 years of age, most folks are immersed in retirement and reflection. Not so in the case of Big Sur artist Emile Norman. "Give me ten square feet, and I can give you a thousand ideas," he declares without a note of exaggeration--and after spending an hour with him, you may believe his gift is understatement. He impishly claims to have never "worked" a day in his life, yet he spends every day in his studio, creating a fantastical range of mosaic and inlay masterpieces using techniques and materials primarily of his own invention. Self taught in the arts, Norman has never followed a predictable path; however, his biography captures the enormity of his courage in creating a remarkable life as an artist, a community member, a mentor, and a gay man fully "out" long before it was fashionable. Will Parrinello, aided by producers Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry (both of LA Law fame), create an evocative portrait of an inspiring artist whose greatest design may be his own life.
