ROW HARD NO EXCUSES
USA, 2007, 88 MIN
DIRECTED BY LUKE WOLBACH
In English, Spanish, French, Swedish, and Mandarin with English subtitles
East Coast Premiere
Fifty-eight days in a hand-crafted rowboat pits two middle-aged men against the Atlantic Ocean, their competitors, and their own emotional and physical frailties. They are in the race of their lives. A race they are certain they are prepared for. But nothing prepares them for the torture they ultimately endure. Americans John Zeigler and Tom Mailhot, at fifty-one and forty-one, are among the oldest competitors in The Atlantic Rowing Challenge, a grueling test of persistence, physical strength, and patience. An eclectic cast of like-minded sports extremists from around the globe surrounds them. 24/7 cameras capture every grunt and every stroke of the oars. The camera also reveals the eternal beauty of the unending sea and unreachable horizon. The two adventurers find that the race offers different challenges than they thought. They find their friendship tested beyond limits. They find there's more to victory than winning. And they find the aftermath of the race as difficult to conquer as the race itself. This film explores, with extraordinary care and warmth, the human quest to conquer nature as a way to explore one's self.
